Al primo quarto Slam in carriera, l’azzurro ha perso contro Ben Shelton: 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 lo score in quasi quattro ore di gioco. Sonego esce a testa alta dagli Australian Open, giocando un grandissimo tennis soprattutto nel terzo e nel quarto set. Lorenzo ha pagato qualche errore di troppo nei primi due parziali, in cui aveva commesso 32 errori gratuiti. Resta un inizio di stagione più che positivo per Sonego che da lunedì tornerà in top 40.
